Pumping
Working the board and foil up and down to generate and sustain lift without external power — to connect waves, link bumps, or dock-start. A property the hosts prize in a front wing alongside glide.
- Discussed as a foil-design trade-off: the “new generation” of foils promising combined glide and pumpability (Ep 52, WangLordz Christmas).
- Julien Salles of F-One talks “Pluming” / the Plume around pump-and-glide design (Ep 111).
- General framing: pumping is the core skill linking every foiling discipline, which is why cross-discipline learnings (Ep 108, Ep 109) transfer.
Ripple additions (batch 2, 2026-07-20)
- Keahi De Aboitiz (Ep 6): beginners tend to over-pump, which on high-aspect foils can slow you down; tips include using the upper body/arms early, shifting front-foot weight back for balance, fewer more solid pumps over constant thrashing.
- Klaas Voget (Duotone, Ep 73) credits Axis as first into the dock-start/pumping scene, pulling much of the local downwind crowd onto Axis hardware before Duotone had a competitive offering.
- Fred Hope (Slingshot, Ep 84) and Ken Adgate: board tail flex, not glide efficiency, is what enables pumping — Fred’s own back-to-back downwind board test found tail movement was the deciding factor.
